Descolonizarte Teatro is a professional Latinx theater organization, 501c (3) (est. 2019) committed to promoting the Latin American experience, culture and talent through theater and literary, artistic and educational programming. It is made up of veteran theater practitioners like the Venezuelan Ricky Avila and Descolonizarte TEATRO’s founder, Colombian Nadia Garzón, who have spent two decades creating and cultivating theater in Spanish in Central Florida. Due to Garzon’s theatrical career as an actress, director, and professional voice talent, and her experience as an activist for immigrant rights and as a practitioner of theater for social change, Descolonizarte TEATRO has two main goals: Decolonization through theater and accessibility to the arts. Through the use of theater as a tool for Decolonization, Descolonizarte TEATRO is interested in producing and consuming theater and programming that represents the Latinx community, returns to our roots, and highlights our culture. In addition we are committed to providing accessibility to performances and arts-based education for the Latin American community, including the underserved and underprivileged. This is why we offer accessible and free programming and make an effort to include segments of the Latinx population that wouldn’t have access to these programs otherwise. I’ve been in communication with Terry Olson. We will be performing a 5 minute play by Colombian author Enrique Buenaventura. We are excited to be the first play to perform at FusionFest!
